Furnishing an Apartment

Furnishing a new apartment can be a daunting task, especially if this is your first apartment. Furnished apartments can be one solution, but usually require paying a higher rent. However, there are inexpensive ways to nicely furnish apartments without going into debt or finding a furnished apartment for rent.

Budget

After paying deposits and rent, there is not a lot of money available for furnishing a new apartment. Nice furnishings can be found without blowing your budget if you are willing to be creative and do a little footwork. Start by making a furniture budget and sticking to it. If you only have $100 dollars to spend on furnishing your apartment this month, don’t buy a $500 couch on credit.

Start by making a list of exactly what you need immediately and what can wait until later. Things like framed prints for the walls can wait, while a couch may be considered a necessity. Next, make a plan for buying the furnishing you want while keeping within your monthly furniture budget.

Shop Around
Keep all the room and door measurements for your apartment on a small piece of paper that you can keep in your purse or wallet. Spend time at the library looking at decorating books and home décor magazines for ideas. Next, spend some time on the Internet looking at want ads, auction websites and even listings of things people want to give away.

Also check the want ads in your local paper and look into estate sales and weekend yard sales . If you are moving into a town with a college or university, a drive around campus at the end of a semester can garner some great finds that have been put out by the curb for free. Some of these great finds may require a new coat of paint or minor repairs, but finding a terrific deal on a kitchen table leaves more apartment furnishing budget to buy a new bed or couch.
